Understanding Alcohol and Substance Misuse - ReNew
A bite-sized session to gain an understanding of alcohol and substance misuse.
In this bite-sized session you will gain an understanding of the following:
- • Reasons for drug and alcohol use
- • Understanding alcohol intake (Units, alcohol absorption times, binge drinking, recommended guidelines)
- • Health issues associated with drug and alcohol use
- • Drug categories
- • New and emerging drug trends
- • Polydrug use
- • How to offer basic brief advice in relation to drugs and/or alcohol

Brief Advice and Interventions for Alcohol and Drugs

Drug and alcohol extended session (CPD accredited)
An extended session incorporating content from courses 1 and 2 gaining official accreditation from the CPD. This session can be delivered in 2 parts.
This session goes in-depth looking at:
- • Understanding Alcohol (causes/risks and effects/mental health implications)
- • An in-depth look at alcohol-related health issues
- • Alcohol and pregnancy: Foetal Alcohol Syndrome
- • Understanding alcohol intake (Units, alcohol absorption times, binge drinking)
- • Alcohol withdrawal: stages and symptoms
- • Alcohol and the workplace. Identification and brief advice.
- • Drug use: local and national landscape.
- • Understanding drugs (classification and effects/risks/ harm including cocaine and alcohol)
- • New Psychoactive Substances.
- • Different types of polydrug use and their risks
- • Specific health implications of drug use and harm reduction
- • Drugs and the workplace. Identification and brief advice.
- • Referral and help that is available in the area.

Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS)

Harm Reduction - ReNew

- • Polydrug use: information and risks

Naloxone Training - ReNew
Learn more about the use of Naloxone and how to apply it.
The following session includes:
- • What is Naloxone?
- • Trends in the UK. Focus on local issues
- • Risk factors in overdose
- • Signs and symptoms of opioid overdose
- • Assessment of consciousness and breathing in someone suspected of an opioid overdose
- • Steps to follow when assisting someone with an opioid overdose
- • Administration of Naloxone (mock application)
- • Requirements around recording and completing incident reports
