Drug and Alcohol Recovery Services - South West Prisons

Working together to create a stronger impact

We have great partnerships with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), who deliver regular meetings at many of our sites to offer additional support.

Change Grow Live offer support in many ways and have recently introduced SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) programmes to develop easy-to-learn and self-empowering skills. This will help participants abstain from addictive behaviour and to develop a lifestyle that supports their sustained recovery.

Our Family Service

The Family Service is a key part of our support.

People in early recovery can feel isolated, but experiencing understanding and encouragement from close friends and family can lay the foundations for change.

We educate families so that they can understand some of the difficulties recovery and prison can play on their loved one. Our dedicated family workers offer support each step of the way and also within the wider community to give them an understanding of the challenges that their loved one faces.

“During what has been a difficult time, the Family Service at HMP Guys Marsh and HMP Leyhill have been very supportive to myself and my son.” Mother of a service user.

Foundations of Rehabilitation Programme

We run the Foundations of Rehabilitation Programme which encourages people to take a meaningful look at their offending and think about what a life without substances and offending could look like.

Our specialist Programmes Workers run group sessions at every site to support people with their journey.

“I’ve learnt a massive amount of strength by involving myself with others in very similar situations.” Jason, HMP Leyhill.

Continuity of Care

At Change Grow Live, we support our service users from point of entry into the service and through their recovery journey, whether that is after transfer to another prison or release back into the community. We have dedicated Through The Gates workers to support this process.

We are pleased to see Continuity of Care rates at many sites steadily improving as we build strong and effective links with community partners.

“Change Grow Live lifted a weight off my shoulders when I was being released.” A Service User at HMP Bristol.
