Since the age of 13, Vicky had relied on codeine for pain management, which developed into a dependence. She then spent time in prison after a car theft and also started using crack cocaine with her peers.
A year ago, Vicky decided to separate herself from her social group to avoid further criminal activities. With the support of our criminal justice team, she sought support for her dependency and began medication assisted treatment.
Medication assisted treatment involves taking prescribed medication as a safer replacement for substances you are dependent on. There are different medications you can take as part of your treatment, and it’s important to find the right one for each person.
Following advice from her keyworker, Vicky changed her medication to Buvidal, which has totally transformed her experience and has given her a new level of stability.
“I’m so stable on it [Buvidal] that I think less about drugs and have fewer cravings.”
Vicky’s previous medication had to dissolve under her tongue, which made her nervous, but Buvidal is given through a monthly injection. It provides a long-lasting solution that helps keep the dosage stable over time, which helps lessen withdrawal symptoms and cravings.
Vicky also feels her anxiety and stress have significantly decreased, and she no longer worries about picking up her prescriptions. She is relieved to not have to worry about missing her medication if the pharmacy is closed or if she can’t make it there.
“Now, I don’t have to deal with the stigma of going to the pharmacy or worry about others judging me.”
Vicky has gained a clearer perspective with Buvidal; she feels more focused and less overwhelmed or ‘clouded’. Now, she believes she’s making progress. She understands that there’s still more to achieve but, for the first time, she can picture her future and see herself accomplishing her goals.
“I can actually see life, whereas I couldn’t before, I can now see my life progressing and me doing things in the future."
Vicky’s recovery journey hasn’t been easy, but she’s starting to rebuild her confidence. As her confidence grows, so does her personality.
Joining groups at Change Grow Live has been incredibly beneficial; they’ve equipped her with strategies to manage triggers and cravings while enhancing her confidence.;
“It’s been a challenging journey- blood, sweat and tears- but it’s absolutely worth it.”
Alongside the group sessions, Vicky has become a volunteer with the Lived Experience Network at Change Grow Live. She participates in events and meetings, sharing her insights and opinions to help inform service decisions.
Vicky and a group of individuals with lived experience are launching a new project called the Boutique through the Lived Experience network. The Boutique will offer donated textile and toiletry items, distributed through a referral system to ensure they get to the right people in need. Vicky will handle the check-in process for the items, manage the referrals, and ensure that essential items reach those who need them most. This will include personal care products, along with clothing like underwear, shoes, and a range of seasonal items.
Vicky attributes her increased confidence and newfound independence to the monthly Buvidal injections, which have helped her reach this point. When asked what advice she would give to those thinking about trying medication assisted treatment, she said:
“Embrace it and go for it; it really is life changing.”
As for her future goals and dreams, she expressed:;
“Not to reoffend! My focus is on continuing to build my life, enhancing my personality, and growing in confidence each day.”
Vicky brings a vibrant energy to the Lived Experience group. She demonstrates openness and honesty while consistently pushing herself beyond her comfort zone. She's a valuable member of the team, and we can't wait to see where her journey leads her next.
