We completed 213 blood-borne virus (BBV) tests in January and February 2022, and 153 tests in March! Keep reading to learn more about testing and treatment.
Did you know that getting tested is easy and free? Here’s what to expect:
- A finger prick test to collect five drops of blood onto a card
- We send your test to be analysed in the lab
- Two to three weeks later your recovery coordinator will contact you with your results.
These tests look for signs of HIV, hep B and hep C – like a blood-borne virus MOT.
Why is it important to get tested for blood-borne viruses?
One person dies every 30 seconds globally from viral, hepatitis-related illnesses. You can get tested at any of our hubs in Birmingham. We are aiming to reduce the number of people living with hepatitis in Birmingham and eventually eliminate hepatitis in Birmingham by 2024.
In 2021 a total of 1202 people were tested for blood-borne viruses by our workers and volunteers across our service. Hepatitis C treatment today:
- High success rates over 90%
- Just tablets, no injections
- Tablets taken over 8-12 weeks
- Minimal side effects
- Treatment available for everyone
- Painless and easy liver tests (blood test or fibroscan)
You can be free of hepatitis C. Talk to us now or speak to our dedicated Hep C worker with lived experience of Hep C – Steven Simpson.
Several times in the past I had heard mention of being tested for hep C at Change Grow Live. I'd always considered it unnecessary because I didn't think I had a blood-borne virus.
Recently my drug worker, Julia, asked If I would like to be tested just in case. I had the test and a few weeks later I tested positive for hep C. I didn't expect that!
Julia referred me to an NHS treatment team and I was contacted for an appointment within a week. A month after my appointment with the NHS nurses I am due to receive the medication this week. It'll be delivered to my address.
I'm very pleased I was tested and hope to be cured soon. Thank you to Julia for her support.”
