I live in Staffordshire with my wife, our young son and our puppy, Cornelius. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing and listening to music.
I volunteered to become an Independent Visitor in 2019, after spending six years working overseas. I was looking for an opportunity to make a positive contribution to my local community and, after finding out about the amazing work undertaken by Change Grow Live, I decided to throw my hat into the ring.
I've been an Independent Visitor for two young people, and in both cases, I think the main support I've offered has been as an objective third party for them to chat to. Young people are made aware from the outset that, provided no one's safety is at risk, the things they discuss with their Independent Visitors will remain confidential. This seems to make it easier for them to open up about their feelings, both positive and negative, once trust has been established.
I think volunteering for any cause is worthwhile, not only for the beneficiaries but also for the volunteers. Change Grow Live and similar organisations enable people like me to give something back to their local communities and have a positive impact on people's lives, which is hugely rewarding.
Both young people I've visited have been interesting, talented and incredibly fun to be around. I've really enjoyed the opportunity to spend time getting to know them - their likes, dislikes and ambitions – and watching them grow as individuals. It has been a privilege to build relationships with these young people and watch them develop their talents. From an aspiring cross-country runner to a budding DJ, it's been a pleasure identifying and participating in activities that are aligned with their passions. Watching them progress month after month has been a joy.
