It’s been an exciting start to the year for the Newcastle Stop Smoking Service.

One of the main updates is that we’ve introduced vapes as an alternative aid to quitting smoking. Vapes are available to service users free of charge as part of several pilot schemes we have underway. We work in partnership with Vape Dinner Lady who deliver a vape, consumables and e-liquids, by post, directly to our service users. As both Champix and Zyban are currently unavailable, being able to provide a vape along with other NRT (Nicotine Replacement Treatment) products, gives service users more options to choose from to help them quit.

Vapes are proving to be popular for a lot of people who wish to quit smoking.  They closely mimic the use of a cigarette with the hand to mouth action, and they can deliver a quick hit of nicotine to the back of the throat and come in lots of different flavours. Experts agree vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, but it is not risk-free. However, vaping exposes users to fewer toxins and at lower levels than smoking cigarettes, so by switching to a vape significantly reduces the users exposure to toxins that can cause cancer, lung disease, and diseases of the heart and circulation like heart attacks and strokes.

We continue to provide remote support and e-vouchers as part of our 12-week treatment programme, this provides greater flexibility and ease for our clients. Face to face appointments are also available for those who prefer social interaction via our pharmacy network and our partner agency HealthWorks.

In addition to our direct delivery, we continue to deliver our training programmes, both in person and remotely, as well as attend health and wellbeing events across the city.

Let’s have a smoke free summer

We know that smoking is more tempting during the summer, with more social activities and opportunities to have a slip up. Cravings can be hard, but if you plan ahead for these eventualities you’ll be in control of your quit.

Our team have put together some helpful tips on staying smoke free during the summer, so you can manage your smoke free journey and still enjoy yourself.

Plan ahead

  • Be wary of the 'I will just have one' thought. It can lead to full time smoking again, so plan how you will respond if offered a cigarette.
  • Take some Nicotine Replacement Products out with you, to use if you feel tempted.
  • Set goals e.g., improve your lung capacity, and see the improvement in 4 weeks.
  • Have an excuse ready if you feel overwhelmed and remove yourself temporarily from a tempting situation if you need to.
  • If you’re around other smokers, remove yourself until your cravings have passed. You may be around smokers at the time.
  • Give yourself permission to go home early if you’re struggling and have an exit ready if you feel like you might need one.
  • Maybe invite some non-smoking friends along, so that you have someone to talk to whilst other friends may smoke.
  • Enjoy yourself and have a drink if you wish, but some find limiting how many drinks you have is useful to stay in control of your quit, so plan to have water in between or low/non-alcoholic drinks as well.
  • Keep lots of ice in the freezer for use in non-alcoholic drinks, so they feel good whilst drinking outdoors; or try some new cocktail flavours.

Get support

  • Telling people that you do not smoke, or you no longer smoke creates a positive frame of mind from a positive statement. It also shows to others that you are committed to the quit which may mean that they are less likely to encourage you to smoke with “go on, one won’t hurt”.
  • Telling people how proud you are of yourself and how many days it has been since your last cigarette, sharing your experiences can remind you just how well you are doing or have done, it may even encourage some people to consider stopping themselves.
  • Ask your family and friends for support to help you stay on track with your quit.

Stay motivated

  • Remember your motivation and always revisit the reasons as to why you wanted to stop smoking in the first place.
  • Take up a new activity  like swimming, walking, or running.
  • Remember all the positives you may have experienced since quitting such as better sleep, more energy, being able to breathe easier or just more money in your pocket at the end of the week.
  • Asking yourself how you would feel if you did have some tobacco. Would you feel disappointed that all your hard work had gone to waste?
  • Curiosity can also be a trigger, wondering what it would taste and feel like. It is important to remember just how addictive nicotine is and even a few puffs of tobacco is enough to get you hooked again, so ask yourself is it worth it?
  • Remember smoking is a habit, 80% habit, 20% addiction, so continue to work on cognitive behaviour changes.

Don’t forget if you do have a blip, it’s always better to just try again. Find more tips on how to keep trying if you have a slip while while smoking

Alcohol awareness week

We’re supporting alcohol awareness week on the 3rd -9th July by highlight the links between drinking and smoking.

Alcohol Awareness Week is co-ordinated by Alcohol Change UK and gives us a chance to get thinking about drinking.

Research suggests that smokers drink twice as much alcohol as non-smokers, and alcoholism is at least four times more prevalent among those who smoke too. This could be because tobacco and alcohol consumption may both link with specific personality traits, and that drinking alcohol encourages smoking, since people tend to find tobacco more satisfying when they drink. However, there have been several studies showing that exposure to nicotine can also increase alcohol consumption too.

Whatever the research, we know that by stopping smoking and reducing your alcohol intake can help you feel at your best. For some clients, drinking alcohol can be a trigger for their smoking, this is why we advise our clients that it’s always a good idea to stay away from alcohol in the first few weeks of quitting, so that you don’t feel tempted to smoke.

In addition if you’re worried about your drinking, you can take our Change Grow Live quick quiz to understand how much you’re drinking and get advice.

Our local alcohol hub, Recovery Partnership in Gateshead can also provide free support for people wanting to reduce their alcohol intake and make positive changes to their lifestyle.

Lisa’s success story

A photo of a blonde woman. She is smiling at the camera, wearing a black vest top. She has a tattoo of some flowers on her right arm.

"When I first started quitting smoking, I was most nervous about being without my crutch, which was nicotine. I thought I could never give up no matter what, but that was because I really didn’t want to or have a reason to. As soon as you have a reason your mind set changes, and mine was my health and money.

The stop smoking programme was very helpful. I initially used the service to stop smoking, but it led me to vaping. With vaping I could do it in the house, and my breath didn’t smell disgusting either. Within months I was vaping constantly and spending just as much or more money on vapes each week. All the anxiety around my health came back. I finally thought enough is enough. I’d spoken with the Newcastle Stop Smoking Service, and they told me they could help me again.

They had always believed in me and seen that I was willing to try.

So I started again with nicotine spray, inhalators, and mints. I felt liberated and all the little tricks I had taught myself came back. It was difficult, but I was determined, so I stayed positive. I even joined a Facebook group for stopping smoking and vaping. Reading all the stories helped to keep me going when I felt like I was having a craving. If you’re having a bad day, use your distraction techniques as much as possible so that you’re not thinking about nicotine.

If you’re wanting to quit smoking, remember where your anxiety is coming from because it isn’t from the reduction of nicotine. Your programme is matched to your nicotine intake, and it works on reducing anxiety. I used to say that nicotine made me feel less anxious, but I feel far more relaxed now that I am smoke free."
